Check out the Wausau Parks on the Wisconsin River

Our charming small town of Wausau straddles the Wisconsin River, creating an urban space where you can still experience the beauty of nature. You don’t find many cities where you can launch your kayak or take a peaceful hike in the downtown center! The shores along the Wisconsin River are peppered with parks ideal for spending a day outdoors, either on foot, by bike, or by boat.

A great place to start exploring the Wisconsin River in Wausau is the River Path, which follows the river on both the North and Southside of downtown and heads by Whitewater Park. Along the path, there’s a lovely place to stop with a gas fire pit to take in the views. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, grab a patio spot at WOW (Wausau on Water) or stop by Briq’s for soft-serve ice cream or a sundae.

As a guest at the Stewart Inn, Wausau’s premier boutique hotel, you’ll be just minutes from the Wisconsin River shoreline and the beautiful city parks to take in some greenery. Our stunning 1906 Inn is an architectural gem designed by George Maher, a colleague and contemporary of Frank Llyod Wright. You’ll love the woodwork, leaded glass windows, and modern layout, creating intimate seating areas and five comfortable guest rooms. Join us each morning for a gourmet breakfast, the ideal way to start your day exploring Wausau.

Head to these Breweries in Wisconsin this Summer

Brewing beer has been a tradition in our state dating back to the 1830s, and these breweries in Wisconsin continue with the age-old process, creating hoppy IPAs, refreshing lagers, and malty dark ales. After Prohibition in the area, large-scale brewing production took Wisconsin by storm. While we can appreciate these industrial breweries for their approachable product, the locally-owned craft breweries are creating some of the best ales around.

Downtown Wausau is home to some of the best breweries in Wisconsin. These local brewmasters are dedicated to their craft and love sharing their passion for delicious beer with the masses. Red Eye Brewing is one of our top picks! Not only are they serving some lovely beers, but they also offer wonderful, hearty food options with farm-fresh ingredients and decadent combinations. Additionally, these brewpubs have a lively atmosphere, some with bar games, great outdoor patio space, and cozy indoor seating.

Whether you’re staying with us at Stewart Inn, the premiere Wausau Bed and Breakfast, or booking our new Owl Ridge Cabin, you’ll be in the ideal location for exploring these breweries in Wisconsin. Both lodging accommodations offer a luxurious stay: our B&B is a more hosted experience with a tasty breakfast service each morning, and our cabin is a quiet, private retreat in the woods with a full kitchen and elegant spa bath.

Your Guide to the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is one of the biggest draws to downtown Wausau. The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is one of two museums to receive the coveted National Medal, the highest honor given for significant contributions to the arts and the local community. The main goal of this museum is to make seeing these collections accessible to all and enhance lives through art. We can definitely attest that visiting the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum will add a lovely element to your getaway to Wausau.

Grab a Cocktail at the Timekeeper Distillery in Wausau

One of our favorite date night spots in Wausau is at the elegant Timekeeper Distillery for a cocktail (or two). Located in the old Milwaukee Road Train Depot, you’ll notice the historic charm from the minute you arrive—beautiful exposed brick walls, dark wooden beams spanning the stark white ceiling, and Edison bulbs draped above the bar top set the mood. If you’re there at the right time, you’ll hear the train rolling by as well, sending you back to the time when the depot was operating.

Talented mixologists tend the bar, creating craft cocktails with all the bells and whistles from the Timekeeper Distillery’s own spirits. The bartenders use tricks like smoked oak, burned orange rind, and special bitters to enhance cocktails with flavor and flair. Light fare is available in the form of charcuterie and cheese boards, creative lettuce wraps and tacos, and cheesy flatbreads. You’ll find cozy, intimate seating inside and lovely, welcoming (for your dog friends, too) outdoor patio space.

Thankfully, Timekeeper Distillery is within walking distance from our Wausau Bed and Breakfast, so it’s genuinely a must-try for our guests. The Stewart Inn is known as one of the most beautiful homes in Wausau, and that’s why Innkeepers Randy and Sara wanted to share it with the public. You’ll find five luxury guest rooms with the stunning architecture of George Maher—a contemporary of Frank Llyod Wright.
