The best way to get those panoramic fall views is to take a hike, but it’s certainly not your only option to enjoy the magic of fall.  There are a full range of fall-themed activities to enjoy in Wausau, and we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites for you below.

  • Rib Mountain State Park, home to the popular Granite Peak Ski Area during the winter, is also an incredible place to see fall foliage at its peak.  It is the third-highest point in Wisconsin, offering one of the best views of fall foliage around. Granite Peak Ski Area also offers a fall chairlift ride to the top, so visitors can still enjoy the changing trees below without the necessity of a hike.
  • Fall Foliage at our Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast in WausauNine-Mile Forest Recreation Area has over 30 miles worth of trails to explore, all of which are beautiful during the fall.
  • The Dells of Eau Claire County Park are magical during peak fall foliage season.  Multiple bridges cross the river, offering incredible scenic overlooks.
  • Take a scenic drive, and take in the fall colors from the comfort of your car.  One of the best drives in the area is along Highway 107, between Merrill and Tomahawk. The trip is approximately 30 miles long and meanders alongside the Wisconsin River, allowing for breathtaking views as you go.
  • The River Walk, a paved path along the Wisconsin River, follows the whitewater course to Oak Island Park. Cross the bridge, and you’ll find yourself on the heavily wooded shoreline of Fern Island Park, which has an excellent trail system worth exploring this fall.
  • Spend an afternoon birding at Bluegill Bay Park, and relish the fall colors while you’re there.
